Training at Island Aikido means learning from some of the most experienced instructors in North America. Our instructors have studied directly under Japanese sensei and continue to learn from one another and an international roster of guest instructors.
Dr. Fred Haynes Shihan
8th Dan — Studying directly with Gozo Shioda in Tokyo, Fred graduated from the professional instructors' program in 1987. Internationally renowned, his fun teaching includes unique insights that enrich the growth of every member.
Dr. Judith Berman Sensei
5th Dan — Practicing since 1981 with Utada and Kushida Sensei in the USA, uchideshi of Gozo Shioda, Judith joined our instructor roster in 2011. Drawing on a remarkable Aikido career, Judith brings tremendous depth to our program.
Jim Kightley Sensei
6th Dan — Training with top Japanese, Canadian, and UK instructors since 1984, Jim founded Waterloo's first Yoshinkan club. Moved to Victoria and co-founded Island Aikido in 2004. Jim's teaching excellence enhances every class.
