Do I need prior martial arts experience?
No prior experience is necessary! Aikido is designed for all levels, from absolute beginners to experienced martial artists. Our instructors will guide you through the foundational movements and principles.
What should I wear to my first class?
For your first class, just wear comfortable athletic clothing that allows for a full range of movement. Long pants are preferred. No special uniform is required to start.
How long does it take to get a black belt?
The journey to black belt (Shodan) typically takes 4-6 years of consistent practice and dedication. It's a personal journey, not a race, and the focus is on continuous learning and mastery rather than speed. The number of classes you can attend will play a big role, vs just time.
Is Aikido good for self-defence?
Yes, Aikido is an effective martial art for self-defence. It teaches you to blend with an attacker's motion and redirect their energy, using joint locks, throws, and pins to neutralize aggression without causing unnecessary harm.
What age groups do you teach?
Island Aikido primarily offers classes for adults and youth. We welcome individuals to try a class for free to see if this is a good fit.
How much does it cost?
Our monthly fees are $50 for adults and $40 for youth. 50% off additional family members. Or get a set of drop-in passes: $100 for 10 classes for adults, $80 for ten classes for youth & students. We also offer a free trial class for new students.
What's the difference between Aikido and other martial arts?
Aikido is focused on defence rather than attacks. It is unique in its emphasis on harmony, blending, and non-resistance, focusing on deflecting an attack rather than meeting it with force. It's a non-competitive art, fostering personal growth, cooperation, and mutual respect among practitioners. Aikido is a defensive art.
Do I need to be in good shape to start?
No. Aikido is a great way to improve your physical fitness, flexibility, balance, and coordination. Our instructors will help you progress at your own pace, and you'll find your conditioning improves naturally as you train.
